2022 Consignment List and Sale Details!

The 9th Annual Montana Ewe Sale is set for Wednesday, September 15th, at 6:00 pm sharp. Ewes will sell at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds in Miles City, and this year features 1,120 head of Montana raised yearlings and ewe lambs. The first 220 head will be offered and sold on-site at the Agri-Sports Building.  Another 900 head will be available off-site for country delivery.

To kick off Ewe Sale Day, Montana State University Extension will be hosting an educational program.  The program runs from 10 AM until 3 PM and includes a spectacular barbecue lamb lunch.  Topics covered include: learning to combine NSIP values with physical evaluations of bucks.  This will be a hands-on portion, led by Dr Chris Posbergh and Brent Roeder of Montana State.  Liz and Sarah from the MSU Wool Lab will then discuss how wool is sorted into different lines for fabric uses.  Ryan Keyes of Elevate will prepare a lamb loin chop lunch from 11:30am til 1pm.  Updates in the afternoon will begin at 1pm in the new Events Center on the fairgrounds.  Look forward to updates on the building plans for the new MSU Wool Lab, a visit with Doug Ekberg of Wildlife Services, MSU research updates from Masters Student Danny Schaub.  Ben Lehfeldt will fill everyone in on what’s new with the American Sheep Industry Association, Dave McEwen will provide an update from the American Lamb Board, Sam Ortmann will speak about the Wool Council, and more!  There will be something for everyone.

There will be plenty of time to look through the ewe and ram offering on Wednesday.  The Ewe Sale social will begin at 5pm, with snacks and a cash bar available.  Lewistown Livestock Inc will be handling the sales this year, so be sure to get a bidders number from their table ahead of the sale.  The Ewe Sale starts promptly at 6pm. First to sell will be a donation ewe, donated by John and Betty Sampsel of Hughes Newford Co. of Stanford, MT.  A variety of wool and meat-breed ewes will be offered, on-site and off-site.

Ewes offered have a reputation for quality, so you can feel confident buying your ewes at this sale.  The on-site ewes will be individually inspected by our sale veterinarian for general health, clear eyes, sound mouth, and udders.  The ewes offered have been treated for keds at home. Any ewe not passing inspection will be screened out and will not sell—we want buyers to take home ewes that are functional and ready to go!  The on-site ewes are available for viewing after 3pm on Tuesday and all-day Wednesday!

Many breeds will be offered, from 15 different consignors.  We welcome Rita Wemmer as a new consignor for 2022. Rita has raised commercial Targhee sheep for over 40 years in Hillside between Cohagen and Miles City. She and her husband Gerome purchased bucks in Miles City for decades and have always been strong supporters of the MT Wool Growers Association. After Gerome passed in 2021 Rita continues the tradition of breeding functional commercial Targhee ewes that raise heavy lambs and produce good wool. Rita will bring 20 of her best yearlings to the sale in September and we’re glad to welcome her as our newest consignor.

A new name for a seasoned consignor describes Lazy 4X Livestock Co. The Lazy 4X Livestock Co is headquartered in Cohagen, MT and run by Lane and Krysta Green. This year Lazy 4X Livestock Co will consign 20 yearling Targhee ewes plus 5 head of Suffolk ewe lambs.

Suffolk and Suffolk/Hampshire ewe lambs will be offered in pens of five. All whiteface ewes are about a year-and-a-half old, born in the spring of 2021, with the exception of Kathryn McRae’s lot of ewe lambs. Check the consignor listings on the following pages for details!

The off-site lots will be offered by Lehfeldt Rambouillets (Lavina), the Hollenbeck Family (Molt), and Helle Rambouillet (Dillon).

Ben Lehfeldt from Lehfeldt Rambouillets will sell two lots of 100 head each. The 100 head lots will be offered in groups of 50 head—Lots A and B.  Successful bidders will have the option of taking one or both lots at that price before bidding is reopened on the remaining ewes.

Helle Rambouillet offers up 300 Rambouillet yearling ewes for your consideration. We will offer these yearlings in groups of 75 head-Lots A, B, C and D. Successful bidders will have the option of taking one or all lots at that price before bidding is reopened on the remaining yearlings.

Blue Bell Sheep Co is offering 100 head off-site, offered in groups of 50 head.  Blue Bell Sheep/Hollenbeck Land and Livestock is offering 30o head of yearlings for county delivery.  These yearlings will be offered in groups of 75 head-Lots A, B, C, D.

Here’s a great opportunity to partner with another sheep producer in your area and increase your flock numbers!
