All shepherds and shepherdess’ will want to mark September 12, 2018 on their calendars to attend the 5th Annual Montana Ewe Sale. The social begins at 5:00 pm on September 12 at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds with the sale starting at 6:00 sharp! All ewes will be available for buyer’s to preview Tuesday evening and all day Wednesday. Consignors will be available to answer questions and visit.
The 5th Annual Ewe Sale will feature 15 consignors from across Montana bringing nearly 300 ewes to Miles City. These sheep will sell in pens of 10 or 20 head for the whiteface breeds and in pens of 5 for the black face breeds. If you’re looking for a larger number of ewes then look no more–Blue Bell Sheep will offer three full loads, about 350 head per load, of yearling Targhee X Rambouillet ewes. Buyers will take delivery following the sale with two loads of ewes located in Garfield County and one load of ewes is 25 miles north of Beech, ND. These ewes are grazing leafy spurge and been run with guard dogs and herders. Buyers will gate cut their load so there’s plenty to choose from at both locations.
Many of the consignors are repeat reputation commercial and purebred breeders that bring their high quality females to this sale. Buyers can rest assured that if you purchase ewes in Miles City they will have all the things that a good ewe needs: a good mouth, two clear eyes, two good teats and no obvious health issues.
How can the ewe sale committee make such a statement? We tip up each one individually and inspect every ewe that is sold on the grounds. If a ewe is sifted out by the sale veterinarian, she doesn’t sell! Ewes are treated for keds at home and get a second dose on inspection day as well.
Every year since the inception of the sale we attract new consignors. First time consignors in 2018 include Cindy Gee from Sheppard. Cindy and her husband Richard have a pen of ten nice Columbia yearling ewes that they take great pride in and we welcome the addition of the Columbia breed. Justin King from the Hammond country in SE Montana offers 20 head of commercial Targhee yearling ewes.
Although it’s not his first year to consign, Colin McWilliams from Cohagen has 40 head of ewe lambs for sale! These lambs are Targhee X Cormo crosses and are out of the Dan Hoverson flock which Colin purchased in it’s entirety. Kathy McRae from Jordan will sell yearling Targhee X Cormo ewes.
Returning Targhee breeders include Green Ranch, Dallas Sheep Company, Kevin Halverson, MT Sheep Company, Sam Ortmann, Bieber Land, and Tomsheck D&L Inc.
Blue Bell Sheep will have 20 head of Targhee X Rambouillet yearlings on the grounds to sell also.
Suffolk and Suffolk X Hampshire ewe lambs sell in lots of five head. Breeders bringing blackface ewe lambs include Dana Penrod, Robertta Dawe and Jeannie Green.
