—137th Annual MWGA Convention—All In-Person Events Canceled—

Previously scheduled in Billings, MT for Dec 3-5.  The Annual Meeting will take place online, on Zoom, Dec 12th, 2020, at 3pm.  See bottom of page to register.

The Montana Wool Growers 137th Annual MWGA Convention has been canceled. Due to COVID-19 and gathering restrictions, the MWGA Board voted to cancel our in-person event, scheduled for Dec 3-5 in Billings, MT. This was not an easy decision, and it took several “Plan B’s” to find a solution that was the best compromise.
As an organization, the board has the responsibility to make the best choice available to allow participation of the membership and conduct necessary business. Online options, such as Zoom and Webex for online convention/webinars are a good tool, but for this membership, it was not necessarily the most accessible option. After much discussion, plans were made for online resolution meetings, mail-in voting, and an online Annual Meeting. While not a perfect remedy, it will allow more members to vote and view the meetings.


MWGA is a grass-roots policy organization, meaning our membership creates the policy that we operate based off of. When our Public Affairs Director, Jim Brown, goes to bat for the organization on issues affecting sheep producers, he uses guidance from MWGA’s resolutions in order to appropriately advocate for this Association.

In a normal year, the President of MWGA appoints members to resolution committees. They are asked to meet at MWGA’s Annual Convention to review older resolutions (sunsetting resolutions are 5 years old, and get reviewed every 5 years)and draft new resolutions. This year, the aforementioned process will take place online, using the Zoom online meeting platform. Those committees have been notified by mail and email. As a member, you have the ability to also add resolutions. If you are not on a committee, but have a pressing resolution you’d like to propose, please contact Leah Johnson by 12 Noon on Thursday, November 19 by email, leah@mtsheep.org or by phone (406)-442-1330 with the exact wording you’d like to present

Electing Board of Directors:

During Convention, nominations are also taken from the floor during the Annual Meeting. Since members will be voting by mail this year, additional nominations must be sent to the nominating committee chair, no later than 12 Noon on, Friday, November 20.  See the directors available for voting below.  John Sampsel was not included in the MWGA Wool Grower magazine issue, because he had not yet been nominated.  Please read about each nominee below.  Mike Hollenbeck and John Sampsel are running for District 2, and Cord Bieber and Lane Green are running for District 3.  Click the link below to read about each Director running.

Voting By Mail:

After those committee meetings, you will receive a ballot in the mail for voting. The ballot will include the resolutions which need to be voted on, as well as voting for the District directors. If all goes as planned, those ballots will go in the mail Tuesday, November 24th.
They are due back to the MWGA Helena office (in the envelope provided) by the end of the business day on Wednesday, December 9, 2020. Ballots will be counted on December 10, and results will be announced at the MWGA Annual Meeting, on the online Zoom Platform, at 3pm on Saturday, December 12, 2020.

Voting Rules:

You must be current on your dues to vote. If you have not paid for your membership in 2020, please send in a check for your dues with your ballot (dues payment information will accompany the ballot), or abstain from voting. Several Wool Pools have paid estimates for you, even if your wool has not sold, so please check with your wool pool secretary or call Leah if you’re unsure of your payment status.

ONE vote per membership. If your ranch entity is a member, your family has one vote.

Please remember to:
Review the ballot options completely.
Vote clearly, using a black or blue pen.
Sign your ballot.
Seal it in the addressed and stamped envelope provided.
Place it in the mail ASAP with time for it to arrive in Helena before Dec. 9, 2020.
